Dr Thamizan Tucker | Clinical Psychologist BA (Psych), D.Psych (Clinical), MAPS.
With over 20 years of experience as a clinical psychologist, working in public and private settings, I have developed a strong interest in workplace stress and trauma, particularly for those on the “frontline”, namely police officers, ambulance officers, firefighters, nurses, doctors, and other health workers including psychologists.
It takes a special kind of person to work in these areas, where we can experience the best and the worst of human nature, and regularly have experiences that challenge us professionally and personally. Working with police and other emergency service members in my private practice, I am more aware of the challenges faced and the toll this can take on general well-being and social, emotional and physical functioning. Debriefing is a crucial part of dealing with any traumatic experience and needs to occur on a regular basis. I believe that, in these professions, what we think we are signing up for and what we then experience are quite different. And we can never predict how we will respond as humans to the behaviour and suffering of other humans.
